Meet some of the Rio Grappling Club Western Cape Instructors and Team Members

Roberto Atalla

4th Degree Black Belt

Roberto Atalla is the founder of the Rio Grappling Club. This legendary BJJ instructor and former World Champion is widely considered as one of the finest Jiu Jitsu black belts teaching in the world today.

Rico Hattingh

1st Degree Black Belt

Rico Hattingh is a local martial arts legend. In 2003 he became the 1st South African Heavyweight MMA Champion, and remained undefeated until his retirement in 2011. Rico is the leader and coordinator of the Rio Grappling Club in the Western Cape.

Gary King

Black Belt

Gary King is the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Instructor at Panther Fighting Arts. He is a qualified Mixed Martial Arts judge and referee and has worked as a MMA commentator. His career as a martial artist began in the early 1990’s.

Shaughn Vos

Black Belt

Shaughn Vos is the head coach of Rio Grappling Crucifix. He is very successful competitor, coach and family man. Shaughn’s big passion is to coach and develop the talent of up and coming competitors.

Gerhard van Niekerk

Brown Belt

Gerhard is the instructor at Brothers in Grappling and a grappling fanatic. He loves to compete and is a regular face on the competition circuit – be it in Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Submission Grappling.

Jerome Peterson

Brown Belt

Jerome Petersen is the head coach at Apex Jiu-Jitsu Somerset West. Jerome is a full time professional Martial Arts Instructor. His passion is watching his students grow with Jiu-Jitsu

Anthony Kettle

Purple Belt

Anthony is the owner and head coach of Panther Fighting Arts. He is a well-known coach and promoter of Mixed Martial Arts in the Western Cape, as well as the coach of a number of professional fighters.

Juan Lagrotteria

Purple Belt

Juan is the assistant Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor at Rio Grappling Club Crucifix. After a stint as a MMA fighter, Juan has decided to focus all his energy on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
